La storia inizia nell'Artide, qui un improvviso cambio meteorologico risveglia una gigantesca
mantide religiosa da lungo in letargo tra i ghiacci.

Facendo un lungo e stancante viaggio, il mostro
raggiunge gli Stati Uniti d'America dove per prima cosa distrugge un aeroporto. A causa di questi avvenimenti, il
colonnello Parkman inizia a 

indagare per conto dello Stato sulla natura dell'essere presso un avamposto
militare sulla Distant Early Warning Line.



Mentre da un lato procedono le ricerche militari nel completo nulla, a Washington DC viene
inviato un artiglio della mantide a un paleontologo, il dr. Ned Jackson, che immediatamente 

apprende la
gravità della situazione dopo aver capito la natura dell'animale. Ad affiancare Jackson si unisce la fotografa Marge
Blaine, cercando di dare una mano trovando materiale sulla 

creatura.
